Bachelor in Fine Arts - Print Making

4-Year Undergraduate Programme | NEP 2020 Aligned
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Print Making is a four-year, eight-semester undergraduate degree programme offered by the Faculty of Fine Arts at IIP Academy in academic collaboration with Bareilly International University (BIU). Fully aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, this programme combines rigorous studio practice with critical theory, art history, cultural research, and entrepreneurial skills to produce professional printmakers, visual artists, and creative leaders.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The BFA Printmaking program provides students with a comprehensive foundation in traditional and contemporary printmaking practices while encouraging creative exploration, critical thinking, and visual experimentation. The program introduces printmaking as both a technical discipline and a powerful medium for artistic expression, image-making, and visual communication.

In the first year, students undertake a common foundation programme that develops essential skills in drawing, design, colour studies, visual culture, and material exploration. This multidisciplinary foundation helps students build strong observational, technical, and conceptual abilities before entering their chosen specialization.

From the second year onwards, students engage with a wide range of printmaking processes including relief, intaglio, lithography, screen printing, and experimental printmaking. Alongside studio practice, they study the history of printmaking, contemporary art practices, visual culture, and professional methodologies. Through workshops, critiques, exhibitions, and interdisciplinary projects, students develop technical expertise while cultivating a unique artistic voice.

In the final year, students create a self-directed body of work that demonstrates conceptual maturity, technical proficiency, and creative innovation. Professional practice courses, portfolio development, exhibition opportunities, and industry exposure prepare graduates for careers as contemporary artists, printmakers, educators, researchers, designers, and cultural practitioners.

Course Outcomes

  1. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Printmaking) program is designed to develop creative practitioners who possess a deep understanding of visual language, image-making processes, and the rich traditions of print-based artistic expression. The program introduces students to the technical, aesthetic, and conceptual foundations of printmaking while encouraging experimentation, innovation, and interdisciplinary thinking.
  2. Students gain hands-on experience in a wide range of traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques, including relief, intaglio, lithography, screen printing, mixed-media processes, and emerging digital applications. Through studio-based practice, critical discussions, research, and project-based learning, they develop the ability to translate ideas into meaningful visual narratives and original works of art.
  3. The curriculum fosters an appreciation of the historical evolution of printmaking and its significance in artistic, cultural, and social contexts. Students learn to balance craftsmanship with conceptual development, enabling them to create work that is both technically proficient and intellectually engaging.
  4. Beyond technical training, students are regularly exposed to the professional art ecosystem through exhibitions, print studios, artist residencies, galleries, museums, workshops, cultural explorations, and interactions with established artists and industry professionals. At IIP, learning extends beyond the studio environment, placing students at the centre stage of the creative fraternity where networking, collaboration, and professional engagement become an essential part of artistic growth.
  5. A defining feature of the program is IIP’s mentor–mentee based teaching pedagogy, which provides personalized guidance, continuous handholding, and individual attention throughout the learning journey. This approach helps students build creative confidence, professional discipline, critical thinking abilities, and a strong artistic identity.
  6. Upon graduation, students will be equipped to pursue careers as professional printmakers, visual artists, studio practitioners, educators, researchers, curators, designers, creative entrepreneurs, or contributors to the broader cultural and creative industries. Their academic journey culminates in a professionally curated exhibition showcasing an original body of work that reflects technical mastery, conceptual depth, and readiness for professional practice.
